Robotic mower ROI calculator

Put in your acreage, how often it gets cut, and what that costs you today. The calculator works out your cost per acre, what autonomous mowing would cost, and how many seasons it takes to pay for the machine. Every assumption is editable, because defaults are guesses and your invoices are not.

Defaults reflect commonly quoted 2026 figures: roughly $40 per acre contracted, and about $10 per acre in direct cost for autonomous mowing. Replace them with your own.

Your numbers

Acre-cuts per season300
Cost per acre today$40.00
Mowing cost today, per season$12,000
Autonomous cost, per season$3,000
Saving per season$9,000
Simple payback 4.4 seasons

Capital cost divided by annual saving. Excludes finance cost, resale value and the value of crew hours redeployed rather than cut.

What this calculation does and does not capture

Simple payback is the number finance departments ask for first, so it is the number shown. It is also the least generous way to look at an autonomous mower, and it is worth knowing what it leaves out.

What it captures

  • Direct mowing cost avoided, per acre, per cut, across the season.
  • Running cost of the machine itself — fuel, blades, routine service.
  • The capital cost of the machine, undiscounted.

What it leaves out, in your favour

  • Redeployed hours. If crew time released by the machine goes into edging, detail, irrigation or agronomy, the return appears as property condition rather than as a cost line. On most sites this is larger than the mowing saving.
  • Hiring you did not have to do. The binding constraint on most grounds operations in 2026 is labour availability, not budget.
  • Off-hours work. A machine quiet enough to run before opening finishes the ground before staff or players arrive.
  • Multi-site use. One machine moved between properties multiplies acre-cuts without multiplying capital — the fastest payback case there is.
  • Residual value. The machine is worth something in year five. Simple payback treats it as worth nothing.

What it leaves out, against you

  • Cost of capital or finance charges.
  • Site preparation and the RTK correction source, where one has to be established.
  • Trimming, edging and detail work — the machine mows, it does not replace a crew outright.
  • Downtime. Machines are machines. Plan for service the way you do with any other equipment.

If the calculator shows payback beyond about five seasons on your inputs, the honest read is that mowing cost alone does not justify the machine on that property — and you should be weighing it on the labour-availability and redeployment arguments instead, or not at all. We say the same thing on the price page.

Calculator questions

Where does the $40 per acre figure come from?

It is the rate commonly quoted for contracted commercial mowing in North America and appears consistently across industry cost guides. Regional rates vary widely with access, trimming inclusions and site complexity — use your own invoices if you have them.

Why $10 per acre for autonomous mowing?

It is the figure commonly modelled for direct running cost — fuel, blade wear and routine service — once labour is removed from the equation. It excludes the capital cost of the machine, which the calculator handles separately in the payback line.

Should I include my crew's wages if they are salaried anyway?

Yes, if you want an honest number. The hours have a cost and an alternative use. If those hours genuinely cannot be redeployed to anything of value, the in-house case is weaker — and that is worth knowing before you buy, not after.

Can you run these numbers for my property?

Yes, and with fewer assumptions. Send us acreage, terrain, cutting frequency and what it costs today, and we will come back with what the machine realistically does on that ground. Contact us.
